Engineered Bamboo Flooring

Regular bamboo flooring has become more enhanced and developed to suit to the modern requirements and demands of both residential and commercial uses. The introduction of engineered bamboo flooring technology is a breakthrough in the flooring system. Apart from its flexibility, it has the capability to withstand various types of environmental conditions. Engineered bamboo flooring is a combination of bamboo and wood materials, thus the term 'engineered'. These engineered floors are suitable for over-concrete installation, radiant heat, commercial buildings, plywood, and a lot more. The thickness of bamboo on the top-wear layer is sufficient enough to go through repetitive finishing of about 2 to 3 times. The two sub-categories of engineered bamboo floors are Moso Engineered and Tropical Engineered. The former is the most commonly used type for flooring purposes while the latter can be offered as a flooring alternative.

Dimensions and Technical Description

Engineered bamboo flooring is manufactured with the following dimensions and other descriptions:

  • It can measure between two types of lengths which are 1900 x 190 x 14 mm and 2200 x 190 x 14 mm
  • The two enhanced colors of engineered bamboo flooring are natural and carbonized shades
  • Engineered bamboo flooring grain can either be horizontal or vertical
  • The flooring is tested for its hardness and durability with a 1100 to 1300 in the Janka rating
  • The flooring finish uses Aluminum Oxide with UB-cured urethane for top-wear layer scratch protection
  • Floating installation is required for most engineered bamboo floorings

Features of Engineered Bamboo Flooring

The following are the characteristics of engineered bamboo flooring:

  • Lowest percentage of formaldehyde, with 0.0127 ppm for a regular bamboo flooring and 0.02 ppm for a strand woven bamboo flooring
  • Bamboo material is harvested from a 5 to 8 year old bamboo plant
  • Milling of bamboo stalks is through the use of state-of-the-art German and Italian machinery for utmost consistency and quality
  • Guaranteed 25-year warranty
  • Aluminum Oxide finished bamboo flooring has 5-year "wear through" warranty

Floated Installation

An engineered bamboo floor is made with cross-laminated layers in order to cater to nail-down, glued, staple-down, and floated installations. Over time, the no-glue system has changed in the manufacturing process. Floated installation is now the most applicable type of installation used by manufacturers. There are practical reasons for choosing floated installation on engineered bamboo flooring. For one, it is fairly affordable since the process does not need nails, staples, and adhesives, and no special tools or equipment is required. Another reason is the ability of the bamboo floor to adjust to any kind of weather conditions as well as humidity changes. With floated installation, moisture is not easily absorbed and released. Yet with fixed installation, the top-wear layer of the flooring has a possibility of getting damaged during changes of temperature and weather. One more reason is that the bamboo planks are not secured or attached to the sub-floor, which makes it easier for the planks to expand or contract when weather conditions change.
